The process to restore the Price River in Central Utah has been a long-term effort to open the entire river from the confluence with the Colorado River to the Scofield Reservoir 20 miles upstream. After years of negotiation, partnerships, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding, the $3.5 million Helper Revitalization Project was completed in 2023 after the Gigliotti Dam was finally removed, allowing a large section of the Price River to once again flow free.
Helper City, historically a coal mining and rail community, has already received immediate outdoor recreation and economic benefits resulting from this project, in addition to priority species such as the Colorado cutthroat trout and bluehead sucker. In recognition of the local community’s dedication to their local watershed, TU was proud to present Helper City with our first Community Action Towards Conservation and Habitat (CATCH) Award during the Helper Arts Festival.
