Ironman Canada-Ottawa Makes a Triumphant Debut

In 2025, the iconic Ironman Canada made a bold move from its historic home in Penticton, BC – where it was held for many years, save for a brief stint in Whistler – to its new location: Ottawa, Canada’s capital. This inaugural sold-out race quickly affirmed that Ottawa was ready to embrace long-distance triathlon on a grand stage.

A Fresh Course Through Canada’s Capital

The swim began with a single 3.8km loop in the Ottawa River, launching from Britannia Park. With calm currents and spectator access along the riverbank, athletes had plenty of cheering support to launch their day.

The bike course covered 180km, winding through city streets and rolling rural terrain. Of note, the roads were fully closed to traffic, offering smooth riding and views of Embassy Row, lush landscapes, and the historic avenues of downtown Ottawa.

The run was flat and fast: 42.2km on pavement winding through bustling downtown neighbourhoods before guiding athletes toward a finish line framed by the iconic Parliament of Canada. This city-centric finale drew big crowds and electric energy.

Stories From the Field – and Planning Ahead

One age-grouper Josee Courchescne described the experience: “It was awesome to race the first-ever Ironman Canada in Ottawa! …The crowd support was amazing…family and friends were cheering from the sidelines…I finished with a personal best of 11h29m, shaving 18 minutes off my previous PB.”

This sentiment illustrates the power of racing on a course where community, scenery, and national pride collided to create a uniquely Canadian experience.

Given how quickly 2025 registration filled, serious Canadian age-group athletes should watch for 2026 registration opening. As Ironman’s only full-distance race in Canada, Ottawa promises to be an accessible, scenic, and unforgettable race day – and one Canadians should plan ahead for.
