Commonwealth Sport confirmed yesterday that Amdavad, India will host the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. The announcement marks a historic moment for India, which will stage the Games for the second time, twenty years after Delhi 2010. It also sets in motion the long process of assembling the final sport programme for the centenary edition.
Alongside the host confirmation, Commonwealth Sport stated that between fifteen and seventeen sports will be featured at Amdavad 2030. A number of sports remain under consideration, including triathlon and para triathlon. For the global triathlon community, the absence of the sport from the initial announcement has revived familiar concerns.
Triathlon first appeared at the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and has been a fixture ever since, with one exception. In 2010, Delhi was unable to host the event due to the lack of a suitable swim venue. With triathlon already removed from the 2026 programme in Glasgow, the possibility of another missed edition raises questions about the sport’s long-term presence at one of the worlds most significant multisport events.
Following the decision in Glasgow, World Triathlon issued a statement expressing clear disappointment. The organisation noted that the Commonwealth Games Federation had given assurances that the 2026 decision would not set a precedent for future Games and that there would be opportunities for the sport to return. World Triathlon also confirmed that it would continue to work closely with the CGF and local organizing committees to secure triathlon’s place in upcoming editions.
Commonwealth Sport has indicated that the process to complete the Amdavad 2030 programme will begin next month, with the full line up to be announced in 2026. Until then, triathlon remains in a holding pattern, hopeful but once again forced to wait for confirmation that it will be part of one of the Commonwealths most celebrated sporting traditions.
The Commonwealth Games are a quadrennial gathering of 72 nations and territories. First held in 1930 as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada, the event has grown into a global showcase of athletic talent and cultural connection.
