The German legend, multi-world champion and Olympic gold medallist took on the UTMB 50k, and we have to say, he did not do too badly for a side quest!
Jan Frodeno finished first in the 45-49 age group in a time of 6:31:55 and seems to have found a lot of joy in the pursuit of a new athletic challenge. As he said at the finish line, where he was welcomed by legendary triathlon race director Felix Walchshöfer:
“My legs still hurt, but I have to say, what an event and what a weird feeling… I have never ever gone to a start line and genuinely not cared about the result, and yet cared what I wanted to do…like, turn myself out, I don’t know how many times today. I was pretty close to passing out at altitude. But not at one stage did I think oh my god I have to catch this person or I have to get this time.”

Frodeno shared that, following his retirement, he was motivated by a new type of athletic challenge, and one that requires a totally different skill set. He highlighted the technical nature of trail running and shared that living in Andorra gives him plenty of access to the trails, describing it as new, different, and “a really fun challenge.”
He added that this event is something “every triathlete [should] put…on their bucket list!”
We look forward to following the GOAT, wherever his athletic pursuits take him next!
