Much excitement had been building for Ironman 70.3 New York, with a strong inaugural professional men’s field set to race at an event that has sold out since it was established in 2023.

However, breaking news this morning: the race has just been cancelled.

As of yesterday, September 24th, forecasts were warning of a potential Nor’easter expected to bring rain, strong winds and coastal flooding to the region. At the time, athletes picking up their race bibs believed the race would go ahead despite the uncertain forecast, while George Gorman, regional director for New York State Parks on Long Island, said officials would meet with Ironman representatives Saturday morning to determine whether any changes were needed.

This morning, however, the event was deemed unsafe to proceed, with Ironman releasing the following announcement:

In consultation with local authorities, emergency management officials, and public safety agencies, IRONMAN has made the difficult decision not to proceed with the 2026 Northwell IRONMAN 70.3 New York triathlon in Jones Beach this Saturday, September 26 due to a coastal storm impacting the region. We will explore options for potentially rescheduling this event.

We recognize the significant commitment athletes have made in preparation for race day, but the anticipated conditions present risks that cannot be mitigated to the standards required to safely operate the event

Registered athletes will receive a separate communication outlining their options, including details regarding the possibility of a rescheduled event and other available registration alternatives, as those details become available.

Nearly 4,000 athletes were expected to take part in this year’s Ironman 70.3 New York at Jones Beach, which has quickly become one of Ironman’s most popular sold-out races.
