Vincent Luis wins Ironman world title in what could be his final race

It was supposed to be Vincent Luis’s goodbye to triathlon, a bucket-list race before he called time on a 21-year career. Instead, the Frenchman may have given himself a reason to reconsider. Luis is the 2026 Ironman World Champion.

2026 Kona recap

The 37-year-old crossed the finish line in Kona in 7:47:27, collapsing to the ground after breaking through the tape. Within moments, however, he was back on his feet, throwing his arms around his partner, fellow Olympic medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown, and looking like he still had energy to spare.

Norway’s Gustav Iden, the 2022 Ironman world champion, finished second, 1:35 behind Luis. Iden clocked the fastest marathon of the race in 2:36:58, but his bid for another world title had taken a hit on the bike. He was penalized three minutes for drafting, as was bronze medallist Matthew Marquardt of the United States.

Right until the closing stages, Iden believed the victory was within reach.

“When people started to run slower and slower, I could see Vince in front of me and I thought, ‘This is my day,’” the Norwegian said.

Iden may have missed out on the world title, but he left Kona with a substantial consolation prize. His runner-up finish was enough to put him atop the Pro Series standings, earning him $200,000 US in prize money.

For Luis, meanwhile, a race intended as a final farewell has ended with a world championship title—and perhaps a few second thoughts about retirement.

More to come….
