Paralympian Mohamed Lahna completes 5,300-km triathlon across the U.S.
The Paralympic medalist did what is believed to be the first coast-to-coast adaptive triathlon of its kind
Some pretty inspiring stuff from Paralympic medalist Mohamed Lahna. If you’ve felt sore after a long training ride or run, you’d best sit down for this.
Lahna just completed an incredible cross-country endurance challenge. Lahna did a triathlon that stretched around 5,300 kilometres across the United States. It’s believed to be the first time anyone has done an adaptive triathlon like this.
A 6-week trip
Lahna reached Venice Beach in Los Angeles on July 29 after a 483-km run from Las Vegas. That finished up a journey that began in New York on June 13.
The three-time Paralympian opened up this amazing feat with a 45.9-km swim around Manhattan Island. Then he rode 4,828 km across 16 states. The cycling part included a leg-breaking 30,480 m of climbing, too! Then, Lahna transitioned to the final run across the Mojave Desert and into Southern California.
In total, he covered an incredible 5,310 km over 47 days.
Super-high temps
The last section was absolutely brutal. Lahna battled extreme desert heat, soft sand, blisters and constant pain while running on his prosthetic leg.
“The run through the Mojave Desert was incredibly tough,” Lahna said. “The heat was relentless, and running through soft sand with my prosthetic leg demanded an enormous amount of energy.”
Still, he persevered. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, a rare congenital condition that left him without a right femur, Lahna did not receive his first functional prosthesis until he was 20 years old. But then, he learned to ride a bike at 25. And he then crossed Morocco’s Atlas Mountains just a year later. And, he completed his first marathon at 27.
Lahna’s extraordinary career
Since then, he has become one of the world’s most accomplished para-triathletes. Representing Morocco, he won bronze at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games before earning silver for Team USA at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. He has also recorded more than 30 World Paratriathlon podium finishes.
He has quite the résumé when it comes to endurance. Some of his incredible feats include swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar and finishing the Marathon des Sables through the Sahara Desert. Lahna also at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and became the first adaptive athlete to finish the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon.
There was more to it apart from an incredible athletic challenge. His ride was also a fundraiser for Save the Children and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. More than a whopping US$166,000 had been raised by the time he reached Los Angeles, with a goal of US$250,000.
“People will always try to tell you what you cannot do,” he said. “I want children, including my own, to look at this journey and see that their circumstances do not have to define their future.”
This isn’t the last big goal for the triathlete. He also has the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics in mind.
There, he hopes to win his first Paralympic gold medal.
