Shimano’s new SPD-SLR cleat system finally goes public
The cleat that ruined van der Poel’s Roubaix actually has some advantages
Shimano’s new road cleat system broke cover in possibly the most inauspicious way possible. Millions of viewers around the world tuned into to the 2026 Paris-Roubaix watched as Mathieu van der Poel flatted on the Trouée d’Arenberg cobbles, borrowed a teammates bike to get going again and … couldn’t clip in. With both teammates on Shimano pedals, it was clear that something new was in the works.
Now that the new SPD-SLR system is here, with full details made public, the system actually looks like a good idea. There are plenty of advantages to Shimano’s overhaul of its cleat system. Promising lower stack height, lighter weight, easier clip-in and more adjustment range, there’s quite a few improvements crammed into one update. But no, compatibility is not one of them.
From headlines to stats sheets
While Shimano was probably hoping for more hype than havoc by putting MvdP on the SLR for early testing and sneaky media leaks, at least everyone, everywhere heard about the new cleats. There’s no such things as bad publicity, right?
As usual with Shimano, the actual re-design reflects the Japanese brand’s system approach to the shoe-cleat-pedal interface. And, as usual with Shimano, it’s very function and detail focused, especially compared to the hype of its Roubaix debut.
The launch includes two new pedals, two new shoes and four new cleats. As everyone’s figured out by now, the SPD-SLR cleats and pedals are not cross compatible with the existing SPD-SL system. But the shoes are backward and forward compatible, with some potential for limitations and the more extreme ends of cleat positioning.
Shimano SPD-SLR: What is it?
Shimano is labeling SPD-SLR a system, not just a series of parts. All three components (pedal, cleat, shoe) are redesigned to work together to get the full advantages offered by the system.
The biggest changes, and benefits, are to the cleat and pedal but there’s two pairs of new shoes, too.
Shimano changes the shape of the cleat and pedal to significantly lower stack height. How much? A whopping 2.3mm. That is quite a significant difference in the tiny space between a pedal axle and shoe. On the road, it should improve power transfer and give better control via a more stable platform. Cutting down on the material between axle and shoe also makes the cleats up to 20 per cent lighter than their SPD-SL equivalent. Kind of the opposite of the stack height, 25 per cent is a big number for a small change. It mean’s going from 71g for SL cleats to 55g for the SLR. Still, 16g is 16g, right?
While most of us will not feel that 16-gram difference on the bike, Shimano’s also made the SPD-SLR much easier to clip into. That is a difference that every rider should notice every ride. The new SLR pedals have a wider catch zone, making it easier to slide the cleat into place, and engage much faster. Just 10.5-degrees to engage the SPD-SLR cleat and pedal versus 15.5-degrees for SPD-SL.
SPD-SLR cleats: Four colours, four options
Shimano is offering four cleats for the SPD-SLR system. Three are the usual float options. Red is the zero-float option for most direct power and locked-in feel. Blue for one degree float. Yellow for three degrees of rotational float for more comfort and reduced joint stress.
A fourth, the grey CL-SL130, is designed to work better with non-Shimano three-bolt road shoes. Shimano notes that it will not have quite the same range of position adjustment as the new dedicates SLR shoe/cleat combo.
On the shoe side of the SLR system, Shimano’s moved to a new system of high-contrast alignment markings for cleat position. That includes a center window in the cleat for reference to where the middle of the sole is. These markings makes getting both cleats in the same position, every time you put on new cleats or get new shoes, easier. If you’ve shelled out significant cash for a bike fit or have finicky joint issues, this nod to easily reproducible cleat position is a nice touch.
SPD-SLR pedals
The new SPD-SLR platform will launch with two pedal options, initially. Those are the top-end Dura-Ace (PD-R9300) and the performance-focused Ultegra (PD-R8200) series.
Dura-Ace pedals use an injection-moulded carbon composite body with integrated stainless steel contact plates. Shimano uses wide bearings for more even load distribution and improved stiffness, claiming 11 per cent better stiffness compared to Ultegra. Inside the pedals, a heat-treated axle and a fancier bearing surface help reduce rotational resistance by 53 per cent compared to Ultegra.
Utegra pedals use a resin body with the same integrated stainless steel contact plate as Dura-Ace. The Ultegra internals are a bit simpler, but the price is more than 25 per cent lower than Dura-Ace.
SPD-SLR shoes – Dynalast 2.0
While the SPD-SLR platform is the big news, the two new shoes Shimano is launching for the platform also benefit from the brand’s new Dynalast 2.0 fit platform also makes its road debut with the two new shoes.
The top-end S-Phyre RC-910 gets a carbon fibre heel cup, holding the heel in place against twisting forces. A hollow core carbon midsole is quite stiff for pedaling efficiency while minimising weight. The Dynalast 2.0 is deigned to reduce foot fatigue during long rides. Shimano’s also made updates to the upper and to the ventilation perforations.
At the RC810 level, Shimano keeps the same intention with simpler design. It gets the same Dynalast 2.0 update as the S-Phyre, but with Dual Boa Li2 dial in fit, an external heel stabiliser and a hollow-channel carbon midsole. Shimano adds replaceable heel pads to keep the RC810 shoes rolling for long off-seasons of training and racing alike.
