The World Triathlon Championship Finals return to Pontevedra this weekend, a venue that last hosted the championship race in 2023. The elite men will race over the standard Olympic distance, and here’s a look at some of the top contenders heading into what should be an exciting showdown.

Vasco Vilaça leads the standings heading into the final race of the series and, with a top-five finish, is poised to make history as the first Portuguese athlete to claim the men’s world title. Adding to the excitement for Portuguese fans, Ricardo Batista enters the Final sitting third in the series standings.

But back to Vilaça.

The Final in Pontevedra offers a 1.25x points multiplier compared to regular-season WTCS races, meaning 1,250 points are available to the winner. Vilaça has raced five regular-season events, with only his top four results counting, while his closest rival and reigning world champion Matt Hauser has raced four. Taking the top four scores for each, 354 points separate the two heading into Pontevedra.

Head-to-head, Hauser has historically gotten the better of Vilaça more often than not. But given Vilaça’s advantage in the standings, he doesn’t need to win in Pontevedra to secure the world title. That advantage gives Vilaça considerably more margin for error heading into the Final.

The next big name on our minds is Hayden Wilde.

While some questioned his swim ability at the WTCS level following his crash in 2025, his recent runner-up finish at Supertri Jersey, combined with his dominant performances over the T100 distance and newly minted Ironman 70.3 world title, make him difficult to overlook in Pontevedra. He’s out of contention for the series world title, but more than capable of influencing the championship race and challenging for the win himself.

Then there’s Alex Yee.Since 2022, the Brit has earned six WTCS victories, a World Triathlon Cup win, a World Triathlon Sprint Championship title and victory at the Paris Olympic Test Event. His four Olympic medals include two golds, one silver and one bronze, while his 2024 season ended with both Olympic and world titles.

One significant victory remains missing from his résumé, however: a win at the World Triathlon Championship Final. Yee is out of contention for the overall 2026 series title, but Pontevedra gives him another opportunity to add that elusive victory to his résumé.
