The World's Largest Olympic-Distance Triathlon Returns to Noosa This Weekend

Noosa Triathlon

Ranked one of the world’s top 10 triathlons and for good reason, the Noosa Triathlon is amidst its 43rd anniversary. The five-day multi-sport festival began on Wednesday, October 28th, and runs through to Sunday, November 1st, culminating in the Olympic-distance Noosa Triathlon. About 8,500 athletes will contest the main event, while 13,000 athletes will take part in other events across the week.

Held every year at Noosa, in the state of Queensland, Australia, the race is the largest Olympic-distance triathlon in the world and one of the richest races over the distance, with a total prize purse of $75,000. Since its inaugural event in 1983, it has attracted athletes of all ages alongside a long history of elite participation, with local reports estimating that it injects $39M into the local economy.

The Noosa Triathlon program started on Wednesday with a Run Swim Run at Main Beach, while Friday is hosting a 28km social ride, a 5km breakfast fun run, and a 1,000m ocean swim. The weekend festivities include the Superkidz Triathlon and Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon, followed by the Noosa Bolt and Australian Open Criterium, before thousands of athletes gather on Main Beach for the Olympic-distance triathlon on Sunday.

Sunday’s race, the high point of the five-day event, is known for drawing a field of elite competitors, including world champions and Olympic athletes. Ashleigh Gentle, known as the “Queen of Noosa,” won her tenth straight title there in 2024. Matt Hauser won in 2025 and is back this year looking to defend his title. Jess Fullagar took the women’s win in 2025, while reigning Olympic Champ Cassandre Beaugrand finishing third. And Hayden Wilde won in 2023, outracing Hauser by 13 seconds.

This year, Super Noosa Sunday will bring 13 elite men, 12 elite women, and 8,500 age-group athletes to Main Beach and, according to Noosa Triathlon, 58% of this year’s participants will be racing the Olympic distance for the first time.
