The second leg of the T100 Triathlon World Tour in San Francisco was explosive.
But for two of the big names, it was a tale of what could have been, as Paula Findlay and Kyle Smith both finished fourth, just out of reach of a podium spot.
For Kyle, it was both a relief and a disappointment, having finished second in a sprint finish to eventual T100 champion Marten Van Riel last year and ending up the year 2nd in the standings, he would have expected to fight for the win. However, in preparation for the season opener he over-did the heat training and was forced to pull out on the eve of the race, so at least the result proved he is good enough shape to compete.
Meanwhile, Paula has seen the level rise, particular with the emergence of Taylor Knibb and short course stars Julie Derron and Kate Waugh. A fourth shows she is within touching distance of the top three, and a return to race on home soil could provide the boost she needs to return to the podium in a distance she once thrived in.
Can these two take the step up and deliver a performance to remember in the beautiful city of Vancouver?
