Toronto surgeon dies after swim rescue at Barrie Triathlon

A 52-year-old Toronto man died after being pulled from the water during Sunday’s Barrie Triathlon, part of the MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series. Police said the athlete was rescued early in the race and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

The swim element of the event was a 750m one-lap clockwise course from Kempenfelt Bay.

The athlete has been identified in memorial reporting as Dr. Sean P. Cleary, a renowned hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon and a professor who held the Bernard & Ryna Langer Chair of General Surgery at the University of Toronto and practised at the Toronto General Hospital. The memorial reporting notes: “Tributes from colleagues, students, and the medical community have been pouring in, recognizing Dr. Cleary not only for his groundbreaking contributions to surgery and cancer research, but also for his generosity as a mentor and his dedication to patient care.”
