Screen Recording on GARMIN Edge GPS Bike Computers

The current generation Garmin EDGE x40 GPS cycling computers have the hidden ability to screen record activities. This isn’t an officially supported feature from Garmin, and does come with a few things you’ll need to know if you want to capture your rides for overlays/replays/general shenanigans. I find this extremely useful for ride data overlays and showcasing new features rolling out on these devices.

REQUIREMENTS
– Garmin EDGE 540*/840/1040 Series. (Possibly the Explore 2 as well).
– BETA firmware. (Hopefully this will also be in the production firmware soon!)
– Enough storage on the EDGE to save the screen recordings.
– Access to the hidden menu (Press and hold the RIGHT arrow for two seconds on any data page of an activity).

HOW IT WORKS
– Screenshots are saved every 0.5 seconds (2Hz) as BMP files.
– BMP location: GarminScreenRecorderdatetime
– Once activated it’ll continue saving screen shots until the option is disabled or Edge powered off.
– Warning! This results in a LOT of files. 7,200 files per hour. (be sure to delete them once you copy them off the unit!)

CONVERTING BMP TO MP4 (FFMPEG):
– MacOS;
ffmpeg -r 2 -pattern_type glob -i ‘Image-*.BMP’ video.mp4
– Windows
ffmpeg.exe -r 2 -i Image-%04d.BMP video.mp4
