Stella’s Way: A Canadian Fly fishing Journey follows 14-year-old angler Stella Moen as she heads to British Columbia’s backcountry to fly fish for a handful of species with her fly rod. Told from her own perspective, the film captures the learning curve and excitement of fly fishing in British Columbia, from casting her fly rods on remote rivers to watching grayling rise eagerly to dry flies and taking on the power of northern pike in the far north. It’s a young angler’s introduction to wild places, big fish, and the challenges of the backcountry…all experienced with honesty, humor, and grit.
Stella and her dad, filmmaker Todd Moen, traveled deep into Northern British Columbia to explore the waters surrounding Northern Rockies Adventures’ lodge and outpost cabins. Guided by Daniel and Yareni Schildknecht, they searched for rising grayling and powerful pike while discovering the vast landscapes of this remote region.
Their journey included side-by-side ATV travel, a Turbo Otter flight into a secluded lake, nights in a rustic outpost cabin, and even a soak in natural hot springs. Throughout the adventure, constant rain and unseasonably tough weather made it difficult to get into the fish, testing the patience and persistence every angler knows well.
