Splitting long runs during build/peak phase

Just wondering of people’s experience / any studies with splitting long runs up. Primarily to reduce fatigue and stress on the body. This is with the idea in mind that doing two short runs with less physiological stress wouldn’t impact coming run/cycle workouts as much as the stress from one long.

Could be wrong ? Unsure. Let me know !
