Tying the Double Trico Spinner

Tying the Double Trico Spinner

The Trico hatch is one of the best mayfly hatches of the season, and one of the few good ones in the late summer and early fall. It brings fish up in droves, but the dinky size of these flies makes some people shy away. Here’s how to tie a Trico spinner on a size 16 or 18 hook instead of a tiny size 22 or 24.
Hook: Size 16 (western US) or 18 (eastern US) BigEye dry fly hook
Thread: Black, 12/0
Tails: Two to four hackle fibers or Micro Fibbetts
Body: Tying thread
Thorax" Black Spectrablend Dry-Fly Dubbing
Wing: Sparse EP Trigger Point Fiber or similar fine, translucent synthetic, combined with one strand of pearl Midge Krystal Flash and one strand of Angel Hair, Firefly Flash, or similar
