Ironman U, the official coaching certification program of the Ironman brand, has just been relaunched and refreshed under respected coach Natasha Van der Merwe.
A former pro triathlete as well as founder and head coach of NVDM Coaching, she has earned an outstanding reputation as an endurance coach, and Ironman is excited to partner with her as the new leader of this initiative.
The coaching certification will include three levels, the first two of which can be completed remotely and asynchronously, helping lower barriers for coaches to take part. The third level includes a live coaching component, a key element in integrating coaching learnings into real-world settings.
In addition to the general reboot of Ironman U, there is also a recertification option for existing graduates of the program to refresh their skillset based on the latest evidence and evolution of the course, bringing it up to date for 2026.
In general, this announcement has been incredibly well received by the triathlon community. The fact that athletes can search for Ironman U-certified coaches when beginning their journey toward becoming an Ironman is intended to enhance trust and credibility, giving athletes confidence that the coaches they select are well equipped to guide them through the unique demands of Ironman racing, one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet.
At the same time, others have raised questions about how to differentiate between the myriad of coaching credentials currently available, with no clear industry gold standard or expectation (a subject for another day).
Nevertheless, we commend Ironman for continuing to invest in coach education and helping make evidence-based coaching more accessible across the sport, ultimately benefiting the athletes pursuing their goals.
